TOGETHER series
Come and join us at King’s – online or in person – as we begin our new series, TOGETHER.

“The disciples were first called Christians in Antioch”

Many billions of people have identified as “Christians” over the centuries, but the first to receive that name were the disciples in Antioch.

In many ways they serve as a template New Testament church. The disciples in Antioch were the first community to include Gentiles alongside Jews, bringing people from very different backgrounds together. They gave generously to the poor. They received and developed all kinds of spiritual gifts, and sent out missionaries all over the known world. They taught the Scriptures, worshipped, prayed and fasted, and quickly developed a diverse leadership team. When Barnabas first visited the church, he marvelled at the grace of God among them.

Specifically, they also serve as a model for us at King’s. For many years we have lived with prophetic promises and encouragements about being an Antioch-style church: a church which can resource other congregations around the world, and in which Word and Spirit, grace and discipleship, unity and diversity are put on display.

Their example is particularly timely at the moment. In the story of Acts, we see the church scattered from Jerusalem (chapters 8-10), and then we see it gathered in Antioch (chapters 11-13). After a period of being spread all over the place – much as we have been in the last two years, although for different reasons – the people of God were brought back as one. After several chapters focusing on individuals, in Antioch the church comes together.

In this series, we will focus on the Antioch church and reflect on the foundational values that hold us together, and the kind of church we want to be. Like the Antioch church, we want to be a community, a people on mission, a people of mercy and generosity. We want to be disciples, who delight in the Word and are filled with the Spirit. We want to be diverse, prayerful and gracious. And in a fragmented and often scattered generation, we want to be these things together.

We look forward to seeing you at King’s!
