Rebuild & Rejoice

Rebuild & Rejoice

There are times in the history of God’s people when rebuilding is needed. Calamity has struck; the people of God are scattered, scarred and possibly scared. Eventually, after a long and challenging season of crisis, the word of God comes with fresh urgency: it is time to take courage, rise up, rebuild, and rejoice.

That is the story of Nehemiah, a Jewish butler in the Persian court who returned to Jerusalem after the exile to restore its honour and rebuild its walls. In an extraordinary joint effort, the people of Judah rebuilt the city in a matter of weeks, persevering and fighting off all kinds of opposition. They prayed, worked hard and sought justice. They celebrated, repented of sin, and worshipped. The book of Nehemiah tells their story, as they first rebuilt the walls (chapters 1-7) and then worshipped the Lord (chapters 8-13).

It is also our story. The Covid pandemic and accompanying lockdowns have scattered the church, scarring and frightening many of us. Our walls are still standing, but there is plenty of rebuilding work needed, both at individual and corporate levels. Many of us have hardly worshipped together for eighteen months.

And into that context comes the word of God with fresh urgency, as it did to Nehemiah. We need to take courage, rise up, and rebuild. There is hard work and opposition ahead, as there always is, but God is with us, and he is inviting us not just to repair but to celebrate. As we study this book and listen to the voice of God, we are trusting that he will both call us and equip us for the task ahead: to rebuild, and rejoice.

Come and join us at King’s – online or in person – as we look at lessons from Nehemiah.
