King’s Church Online
Building a diverse church
serving the communities of London

10th February 2022

From London down to Cape Town

Deb and I have just returned from a fruitful two week visit to South Africa. The travel restrictions brought about by the pandemic meant this was our first overseas ministry trip in two years, and it has been a joy to reconnect with far-flung friends and partners in the Gospel.

We began by visiting Steve and Heather Oliver in Clarens, near the border with Lesotho. Steve leads the family of churches called Regions Beyond (part of the Newfrontiers Apostolic Fellowship) and before the pandemic he and Heather had spent a number of years in Dubai and then London. They have now returned to their home nation and the church they planted many years ago. It was fantastic to spend time with them on their farm, preach in the church in Clarens, and meet with some of its leaders.

Our second week was based in Cape Town, which must be one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Our dear friends from Harare, Scott and Claire Marques, joined us for the week, and we spent our time meeting with leaders from two excellent churches, Jubilee and Common Ground, which are both part of Advance, another family of churches in the Newfrontiers Apostolic Fellowship. We enjoyed great fellowship with the Jubilee elders and wives, and I had the privilege of preaching at their two sites on Sunday. We also joined Common Ground as they marked the transition of their community from one church of ten sites to a family of ten churches. It was a huge honour to be there as they celebrated this significant transition and to be involved in praying for them as they take this step of faith to the next generation.

While we were away we kept in close touch with how things were going back at King’s and were greatly encouraged to hear that people continue to return to Sunday services. We are looking forward to being around King’s for the next couple of weeks before my next trip, which will be to Russia at the end of February. King’s is on a journey of regathering the church, one which is being shared by Christian communities right around the world. The challenges brought by the pandemic have been remarkably similar, whether you are based in London or South Africa. It is a privilege to be able to stand with one another as we continue to build the church and share the Gospel.
