10th December 2015
I love Christmas! Preparations at home are well underway: the turkey has been ordered, we collect our King’s Christmas Tree on Saturday and most of our presents have been bought – or so Deb assures me! As well as the excitement of Christmas, we also have a family birthday in December. Josh will be returning from university at the weekend and we are looking forward to all being together to celebrate Sam’s sixteenth birthday next week.
I am particularly excited about our King’s carol services. Our theme this year is CLOSER and we are offering no fewer than seven services to choose from. Preparations are in full swing and our buildings are busy with band, orchestra and choir rehearsals. This week, I had the privilege of being given a preview of some of what we can look forward to – I was so impressed with both the creativity and professionalism of what I saw. This is an event not to be missed, and definitely one to which you should invite all your friends and family! The first two of our seven carol services take place this Sunday, 13th December, 5.30 pm at both Catford and Lee. If you didn’t manage to pick up a free ticket, remember that you can still come along on the day without a ticket. Morning services will continue at all sites this week, at the normal times. Full details of all our services over this month can be found on at kingschurchlondon.org/closer.
This is also a busy time for all the fantastic volunteers involved in our Christmas social action initiatives. I heard that we have almost sold out of King’s Christmas Trees – just a few left if you still want to buy one! Deb was at our Lee building on Tuesday evening to help the Big Red Box team pack hampers – it is quite an operation! Some 500 boxes have been packed so far and they will start to be distributed through social services and other local charities this week. If you would still like to get involved, have a look at the webpage – donations need to be brought to one of our sites by this Sunday.
However busy Christmas can seem it remains one of my favourite times of the year. Despite my more mature (!) years, I have never lost that sense of excitement the season brings! I love the opportunity it gives to spend time with family and friends; and I love the sense of joy and anticipation we feel as Christians as we reflect on and celebrate the birth of our Saviour. And of course Christmas also provides a fantastic opportunity to invite our friends and families to come to church and find out more about why we celebrate and why Christmas is called Christmas. So I look forward to seeing you on Sunday!
